Lesson 3 - Anthropology: Who Is Man?
Introduction
This session focuses on the nature of humanity. It addresses key questions: Who is man? Where did he come from? What is the purpose of his existence?
The answers to these questions directly impact how the problem of evil is understood.
Themes
This session presents a contrast between two views of humanity. One describes man as both physical and spiritual, created in the image of God. The other presents man as entirely material, the result of unguided forces.
There is also a difference in how human nature is understood. One view holds that man has fallen and requires redemption. The other maintains that man is fundamentally good.
These perspectives lead to different explanations for evil. One identifies evil as rooted in the fallen condition of humanity. The other removes moral constraints and promotes self-fulfillment as the solution.
Key Observations
-
This session challenges the idea that self-fulfillment or following one’s desires aligns with a biblical worldview.
-
It also presents the claim that many social and cultural movements are influenced by the desire to remove moral constraints.
-
You are asked to consider this question:
Why does the existence of evil present such a challenge within a worldview that does not account for it?
