Lesson 1 - Veritology: What Is Truth?

Introduction

This first session provides an overview of the scope and purpose of the series. It is intended to guide participants through a structured examination of worldview, following a framework designed to direct thinking around four central issues: truth, God, man, and the social order.

Throughout this process, a logical and systematic approach is developed to help organize and assess the various claims about truth encountered along the way. The ultimate objective is not merely the acquisition of knowledge, but to encounter God and be transformed through that experience.

Themes

The focus of this session is on truth. What is truth? Why does it matter? What role does it play in understanding God, His purpose, His plan of salvation, and how we live?

Truth is presented as central to the mission of Jesus Christ and at the heart of an ongoing conflict that has existed since the beginning. This conflict divides the world into opposing sides. Lies, as the opposite of truth, influence and capture human thought through deception. Each person is faced with choosing between what God declares to be true and opposing perspectives rooted in the world, the flesh, and the devil.

Truth is defined as conformity to reality. Common, everyday views of truth are contrasted with the biblical understanding, showing a clear difference between the two.

Key Observations

  • This session presents the position that modern culture stands in direct opposition to a truth-centered, biblical worldview. It asserts that culture is not only influenced by falsehood, but is moving toward a state of confusion.

  • The question “What is truth?” is presented as one of the most important questions facing society today.

  • You are challenged with this question:
Do you truly believe that what you believe is real?
