Lesson 12 - Community & Involvement: God Cares; Do I?

Introduction

In this final session of the worldview tour, attention turns to the last of the social spheres: community and involvement. In this area, there is a unique opportunity to draw closer to God and to understand what leads Him to draw near to humanity.

Within this sphere, God is presented as one who cares for those who are alone, rescues those who are rejected, protects those who cannot defend themselves, and sustains those in need. The call is to reflect this same character by learning what it means to love both God and others.

Themes

Participation in this sphere—expressed through service, outreach, and acts of care—has long been a defining characteristic of the church. It is presented as having diminished in emphasis in recent times. In addition, the broader call to engage in society across all areas has become a subject of discussion and disagreement in some settings.

However, Scripture presents a consistent expectation that believers take part in this area. Avoiding this responsibility is not presented as an option. Repeatedly, it is shown that God works through people to carry out His purposes. There is a direct connection between His plan and the way His followers live and act.

The character of Jesus provides the clearest picture of this. He describes Himself as gentle and humble. His actions reflect concern for those who are overlooked or in need. His life demonstrates service, sacrifice, and care for others. Through this, both an example is set and the nature of God is revealed.

This is reflected in the summary of the law: to love God fully and to love others. Love is presented as the central expression of God’s nature. In practical terms, this love is demonstrated through care for those around us.

Key Observations

  • This session emphasizes that if God is actively involved in meeting the needs of others, then that same involvement is expected. This message is likely to produce a strong emotional response.

  • A common question that may arise is what specific action should be taken. The response presented is that this is not about following a set list of actions or rules. Instead, it involves developing a posture of humility, awareness, responsiveness, and compassion.

  • It also involves using individual abilities and resources in service to others and acting on the concerns and direction that have been placed within.
